The series of workshops has undeniably left me plenty to think about and consider, but has also encouraged me with the future direction of my business. In a way I would argue that our main tutor, Steve Baker, has been the Jamie Oliver of business for our class, providing us with ‘food for thought.’
I believe my 15 second pitch has become a lot smoother, and I feel much more confident having practiced it through networking events and in the workshops. By bouncing ideas off others I have felt challenged and encouraged and have benefited from such a set up.
I’ve realised the importance of understanding my customers and their habits in order to optimise marketing activities and sales. As Steve put it, “if people aren’t buying, it’s because the marketing message isn’t right!” I need to think in the mind of the customer and not just as a retailer.
In regards to legalities and accounting, I see how important finance is to a business, especially a new one, so keeping track of it is essential! Discussing mistakes that have happened with book keeping I see the need to double check things as people make mistakes. I will also make sure to stay on the right side of the law!
I am now aware of a scheme in place with ‘Business Start-Up’ for new businesses to apply for up to a £1000 concept fund. I have just had a meeting with one of the business advisers who was really helpful and took me, step by step, through the application process. I was also informed of an annual competition in the Yorkshire area for further funding of £2000, which would be so useful as start-up funds! It’s reassuring to know that there is help available both financially and for future advice.
I will be regularly assessing my business plan and ideas for my clothing brand but feel much more confident than I did, knowing much more than I did. There is always room for growth, and I look forward to the challenges the future brings.
